Fall Nights in the South

The firelight is fading,
The smoke is in my eyes.
Stirring in the coals
Is simply irresistible.
“Throw a log on fire”
Embers flutter all around,
Bright orange-swirling and rising.
Hot dogs and marshmallows
On straightened wire hangers.
“Smoke follows beauty”
Hoodies and crackling wood,
“I’m not tired”
as they fall asleep in lawn chairs.
Comfortable silence prevails
As the crickets serenade.
Fall nights in the South.
